⬤Brian: Shalom! Welcome to Bridges to the Bible! I’m Brian Johnson. And I’m Marcia Johnson. We’ve just spent several weeks crossing the cultural bridge, focusing in on the community nature of Biblical culture. We wanted to take a few minutes and do a recap of where we’ve been.
⬤Gid’on: Your modern western world is so strange! It’s so individualistic! We are more concerned about our community. I’m constantly thinking about what I do, whether it will bring honor or shame, to my family, to my clan, to my neighbors. Also, I want to ensure that we’ve got a good name, a good reputation. And beyond that, names have meaning. When you read someone’s name in the Bible, it tells you something about their character.
⬤Parosh: The bet av is the basic building block of society. It’s a self-sufficient unit headed by the patriarch. Each of us has our roles: men, women, and children. The men work outside the home while the women manage the home itself. Marriages are arranged for the benefit of the bet av, so that it can continue for generations to come, passing down the family land from father to son. We look out for and support one another, redeeming those who become lost.
⬤Brian: The cultural backdrop helps us understand scripture better in its original context. We learned a few things about God along the way. Note the communal language of each:
⬤Marcia: Jesus bore our shame. We are called by his Name and need to carry Jesus’ Name well, the Name above all Names. We are part of God’s family and can call him Father. Jesus came like a bridegroom to take us to the Father’s house, and he is also our Redeemer. God wants to enlarge his family and bring in the lost and have table fellowship with us.
⬤Brian: We hope you’ve enjoyed this series! We’d love to hear your feedback. Leave a comment below, subscribe, and rate our videos and podcasts! We’re taking a short break for now, but we plan to be back in the new year with new materials so stay tuned! In the meantime, may God’s blessing be upon you. SHALOM!
