Psalm 1 paints a vivid picture of the blessings that come to those who do not follow the ways of the wicked. However, it is not merely about avoiding the wrong path; it requires intentional action in the opposite direction. The key to receiving these blessings lies in delighting in God’s instructions, his Torah. By actively seeking and meditating on his commandments day and night, we open ourselves to the abundant blessings and favor that flow from a deep reverence for the Lord.
Delight
Delighting in God’s instructions goes beyond mere compliance; it involves finding joy, fulfillment, and purpose in following his ways. Delighting in God’s commandments means recognizing their value and significance in our lives, understanding that they are not burdensome restrictions but divine guidance that leads us to a life of righteousness and blessings. “Lead me in the path of your commandments, / I delight in it” (Psalm 119:35).
As we delight in God’s commandments, we find comfort in knowing that he also delights in us. Jeremiah 9:24 reveals that God takes pleasure in those who practice steadfast love, justice, and righteousness on the earth. Furthermore, he delights in the truth within us (Psalm 51:6), purifying and transforming us into vessels of his grace and wisdom.
Meditation on God’s Instructions
How does one delight in God’s word? The Psalmist says he meditates on it day and night. What does it mean to meditate? The Hebrew word for meditate, הָגָה (hagah) is translated in a variety of ways (bolded in each verse below):
- “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?” (Psalm 2:1)
- “The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom” (Psalm 37:30)
- “And my tongue will talk of your righteous help all the day long” (Psalm 71:24)
- “As a lion or a young lion growls over his prey” (Isaiah 31:4)
- “I moan like a dove” (Isaiah 38:14)
Hagah suggests something vocal or uttered. Rather than emptying our minds, it calls for actively engaging with God’s words, allowing them to dwell within our hearts and shape our thoughts, speech, and actions.
To Ponder…
Praise the LORD!
Psalm 112:1
Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
who greatly delights in his commandments!
True blessedness comes from fearing the Lord and greatly delighting in His commandments. Reflect on your own heart and ask yourself: What brings me joy? What do I desire? What occupies my thoughts and captures my attention? What adjustments do I need to make to better love and serve the Lord?
