Army Watering Hole

The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.”

Judges 6:11-12

Gideon began his story in fear of the Midianites. The Lord called him to lead an army against this strong enemy. After much encouragement and confirmation, Gideon eventually submitted. He gathered his army by the spring of Harod while the Midianites camped to the north by the hill or Moreh (Judges 7:1). Gideon’s army paled in comparison to the Midianites, yet God had him dismiss all those who were afraid and those who drank a certain way at the spring. Then with the three hundred remaining soldiers, God used them to defeat the Midianites.

Today we visited the spring of Harod (among other places). It’s a reminder of how God can turn an impossible situation around. Will you follow the Lord and trust him?

Drinking water (from our packs) at the spring of Harod a little like Gideon’s men
A short hike above the spring (note the water channel), looking north across the valley to the hill of Moreh where the Midianites camped. The battle took place somewhere out there.
