A Drinking Game

Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.

Judges 7:1

Gideon was not one most would have picked to lead the battle against the Midianites, but God can use anyone for his purposes. Last time we looked at King Saul’s death, but much more happened in this region. Nearby, generations before Saul’s time, Gideon fought his battle. Near the foot of Mount Gilboa lies the Harod Spring. The Lord had Gideon bring his already small force to the spring to drink from it. Those who drank one way stayed while those who drank another had to leave. The end result was a measly 300 men. What could they do against such impossible odds? God needed the army to be small in order to demonstrate that it wasn’t their amazing abilities, but his own might.

Remember Gideon when faced will an impossible situation, If God is in it, follow him.

Drinking (from our packs) at the spring of Harod, remembering Gideon’s troops
Looking up the hillside. The spring is visible at the base
A short hike above the spring, viewing the Midianites’ position at Mount Moreh to the north. The spring feeds the creek in the bottom right, but not into the modern swimming pool.
