Hard Rock

I’ve talked about digging up pottery and bones. Is that all? There’s more to find than that! There are a plethora of rocks to find, too!

Rocks are numerous in Israel. Generally what survived was made out of rock, which was (and continues to be) a plentiful building material in Israel. However, not all rocks are useful. We dug through plenty of rocks which were not of any interest. Such rocks were called “floating”, meaning they were floating in the dirt and not attached to anything. We ended up with a sizable rock pile by the time the dig ended. Smaller rocks sometimes pretended to be potsherds. Other rocks had interesting shapes to them (like clouds), but were still nothing.

However, there were helpful rocks, too. Our main find was an Assyrian wall (about 2700 years old), which crossed through our hole. It was made of rocks. We found some walls coming off the main wall. We even found an older wall beneath that wall! On top of it all was a newer, Roman structure.

The main wall visible is the Assyrian wall (left-right). On the right is a later Roman wall
Beneath the Assyrian wall (far left) is an earlier Israelite wall (see the stones below that aren’t in line with the higher ones)
When removing a rock requires more effort, we used this large bag for lifting it out
