Sounds of the Old City

It’s easy to picture Jerusalem as this ancient city with these old walls and all this history. All this is true. However, there is a modern side to Jerusalem, too. It’s fun when the ancient is blended with the modern. For instance, for four evenings last week there was a musical event called Sounds of the Old City. There were different venues around the Old City for concerts plus some other fun stops along the way. Here are a few pictures to give you an idea from the various nights I went.

The event began outside Jaffa Gate. Here you can see the stage with the Old City wall. There were a couple groups each evening.
Inside Jaffa Gate set against the citadel walls was some great orchestral music by Firqat Alnoor.
Continuing around the citadel, characters inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream were wandering around.
Following the arrows, we passed by various buildings with animations projected on them with music playing.
Arriving at the Byzantine Cardo, this platform was set up. Each chair represents part of an orchestra. When you sit on the chair (or cover the sensor), it plays its music. The more people there, the more complete! Very fun!
Hurva Square was packed (not as much in this picture). The menorah was recently moved here, too.
Completing the circuit in Muristan Square, I saw people dancing but no music. Then I noticed the headphones you can pick up. There was  DJ keeping the beats going.

All in all, a fun and unique experience. It’s great to be able to spend an extended period of time here and enjoy these events! Since this experience needs to be heard, here’s a video montage of a few places.
